An intrepid reporter took a tour of the new RTC Bike Share system in Las Vegas—along the way illustrating the bike-friendly realities of Sin City.
F. Andrew Taylor drew the assignment of taking a test ride on Las Vegas' new RTC Bike Share.
Taylor notes that Las Vegas has transformed as a bike-friendly town since he first moved there 25 years ago. The once "downright bicycle-antagonistic town" is now "crisscrossed with bicycle routes and bicycle lanes, many of them painted green so they’re unmistakable." Moreover, law requires "drivers of motor vehicles to give cyclists a wide berth or the whole lane if traffic allows."
So it's not exactly as if the new bikeshare system is a mirage in the desert. In fact, since it opened in September, RTC Bike Share has 21 stations, "spread out over 1 1/2 miles of downtown Las Vegas, from Sahara Avenue to the Mob Museum and from the Las Vegas Premium Outlets North to Maryland Parkway."
Taylor provides tips for making use of the system, including checking out maps of existing bike lanes and routes, and details about the contractor that will operate the system and maintain the working condition of the bikes and stations.
