The East Bay Regional Park District is planning to daylight Alder Creek in the Oakland Hills. Native fish and other species will benefit.

Robin Meadows writes about daylighting—the process of rehabilitating watersheds by freeing water flow from underground culverts.
According to Meadows, the East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD) is undertaking an ambitious daylighting project. The EBRPD "is about to daylight more than half a mile of Alder Creek in Robert Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve, near Pinehurst Road in the Oakland hills."
"The project will go out to bid early next year and the total cost, including planning and permitting, is estimated to be roughly $11.5 million," reports Meadows.
Meadows provides a history of daylighting in the Bay Area, starting with the daylighting of Strawberry Creek in Berkeley in the early 1980s.
