What time did you leave for work this morning? What time should you have left for work this morning?
The FlowingData website offers the second in a series of map visualizations pulling from data available from the U.S. Census American Community Survey. The latest map shows when people leave home for work.
"As you'd expect, many commuters leave home between 7:00am and 8:00am. However, rates concentrate around this hour much more in some counties than others. This is especially true for counties in the midwest. Around half of commuters in many midwest counties leave during this hour."
The post also notes some of the outliers, especially Humboldt County, Nevada, where more than a quarter of commuters leave for work before rosy-fingered dawn has even made her appearance. Also, in the Aleutians East Borough in Alaska, about 2,500 commercial fisherpeople work on a schedule that is almost the opposite of the rest of the United States.
