Amanda Mickevicius reports on recent developments in Milwaukee's "Garden District, where Alderman Terry Wikowski recently cut the ribbon on a new Urban Orchard project that includes fruit trees of 80 different varieties and an adjacent parking lot constructed from permeable pavements that will allow for on-site rainwater retention and irrigation.

"The Urban Orchard is located in the 'Green Corridor,' a portion of S. 6th St designated by the city to serve as a fully sustainable environment for conservationist practices and education to the local community and other cities nationwide," according to the article. "The Green Corridor is part of the plan by the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District and its Executive Director Kevin Shafer to create green areas in the metro area that capture rainwater where it falls, to reduce runoff into sewers that can overpower the system and its Deep Tunnel during major rainstorms." The article includes more information about the current amenities and facilities found along the Green Corridor as well as plans for more to come.
