"The National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO) released a guide, "Don't Give Up at the Intersection," with best practices for modern intersection designs," reports Katie Pyzyk.

"The design guidelines prioritize safety and improving walking and biking for citizens of all ages and abilities," according to Pyzyk. The Guide sticks to three principles to achieve those priorities: "reduce turning speeds; make bikes and pedestrians visible; and give bikes the right of way."

NACTO presents the Don't Give Up the Intersection guide as a follow up to the group's 2011 Urban Bikeway Design Guide. North American cities have expanded protected bike lane mileage by 600 percent since the publication of that guide, according to the NACTO website.
