Chynoweth Avenue in San Jose, California is notorious for speeding, illegal dumping, and prostitution. The city's remedy includes a fairly comprehensive reconfiguration of the street and its infrastructure.
Julia Baum reports from San Jose, California: "The end of Chynoweth Avenue near Martial Cottle Park in Almaden Valley is poised for a major $2.25 million makeover next year that includes a road diet."
New sidewalks, more street lighting, and new landscaping elements will be added to the street, in addition to vehicle lanes a lane reconfiguration. "Chynoweth’s two travel lanes in each direction will be reduced to one in each with a middle median to reduce speeding," according to Baum. The street makeover includes new bioretention infrastructure.
"A $2 million grant awarded to the Association of Bay Area Governments from the state Department of Water Resources and $250,000 in matching funds from the city of San Jose will pay for the improvements," adds Baum. Construction is expected to last from arch to July in 2017.
