San Francisco Buses May Nab Double-Parkers

Motorists beware - if you double-park in a transit-only lane in San Francisco next year, that bus behind you could take your photo resulting in a $250 citation, if AB 101 is signed by Governor Schwarzenegger.

"San Francisco could soon follow London's footsteps by using bus-mounted cameras to nab drivers who double park in transit-only lanes...The City has 19 streets with more than a dozen miles of transit-only zones... When it comes to double parking in transit-only lanes, the fine in San Francisco is $250."

"A bill, authored by (San Francisco) Assemblywoman Fiona Ma, that would allow the camera enforcement passed the state Senate this week and is now waiting for the governor's signature."

"'If the governor signs this bill, Muni service will be improved,' Newsom said in a statement released this week. 'Double parking significantly impacts on-time performance and delays hundreds if not thousands of San Franciscans on public transit citywide every day.'"

From Assemblywoman Ma's web site:

"Our city's 'Muni' lanes designated for municipal buses have senselessly been clogged by inconsiderate people parking their vehicles illegally in the middle of the lanes. This causes many buses to run off schedule and forces police officers to spend valuable time traveling on buses to ticket these offenders."
