Traffic fatalities declined in New York City for the fifth consecutive year.

"New York City is on track to see its lowest number of traffic fatalities on record," reports Ameena Walker.
"Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that 2018 has been the safest year on record and experienced the fewest number of traffic fatalities since 1910, which he largely attributed to his Vision Zero initiative," adds Walker. In all, traffic fatalities have declined by a third since 2013.
While Mayor Bill de Blasio took credit for the success of the city's Vision Zero initiative, Streetsblog NYC spent the day promoting its choice of City Council Speaker Corey Johnson as the "Vision Zero Hero" in its local "Streetsie" awards.
