Between January and June 2024, 29 people died in traffic crashes in the District. This year, that number fell to nine.

Traffic deaths in Washington, D.C. are down compared to last year, reports Dan Ronan for WTOP News. “Nine people have died, and that includes drivers, passengers and pedestrians in vehicle crashes in D.C. through the end of June, that compares to 29 for the same period a year ago.”
Charlie Wilson, who heads the District’s Vision Zero program, attributes the success to its automated camera safety program and other “cumulative safety interventions.”
According to Wilson, “In calendar year 2025, we’re seeing a decrease in both major injuries and fatalities. If trends continue, 2025 will be the fourth consecutive year we’ve seen a decrease in major injuries to folks traveling on our roadways.”
A preliminary estimate from the National Safety Council notes that nationwide traffic deaths in 2024 decreased by less than 1 percent from the prior year.
