West Hollywood became the first city in the Los Angeles area to commit to building only protected bike lanes in future street projects, reports Todd Flora in Westside Voice.
A motion passed unanimously on Monday directs city staff to “develop a policy by which only protected bike facilities will be planned and implemented in West Hollywood, without removing any proposed bike facilities in the City’s General Plan,” conduct public outreach, and provide the city council with options for amending existing plans to include protected bike infrastructure.
In response to concerns from some council members, “Francisco Contreras, a Long-term Planning Manager with the city, confirmed that the staff sees the motion as a route to making protected bike infrastructure as the default only where feasible and applicable.”
