The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant program has awarded $800 million to projects aimed at improving road safety and reducing traffic deaths.
The USDOT announcement, linked below, includes an interactive map showing details about each grant, which fall into two categories. Action Plan grants help communities develop or improve road safety plans, while Implementation grants can be applied to implementing existing plans.
A press release from USDOT calls the investment historic, noting, “The SS4A awards fund improved safety planning for over half the nation’s population, and will fundamentally change how roadway safety is addressed in communities through local and regional efforts that are comprehensive and data-driven.” The program represents a significant shift in transportation policy and a sign that more city, state, and federal officials are taking notice of the nation’s traffic safety crisis and the structural causes of road deaths.
