Video Explainer: The Magic of Shared Streets

Most people would probably assume a shared street, with no signs, lanes, or other regulatory infrastructure, is an accident waiting to happen. More and more cities are proving the opposite.

The title of this new video from Vox and 99 Percent Invisible is a bit misleading if you're a planner. The headline mentions getting rid of road signs, but what the video is really talking about shared streets.

According to the video, shared streets have been adopted in Europe, as exemplified by Poynton, United Kingdom. But Planetizen readers also know that Chicago has already adopted the shared street model on Argyle Street, New York tested a version of the idea, and advocates have pitched the idea in Pittsburgh.
