Residence in Chicago's TODs Come With a Major Caveat: No Parking Permits

One big idea behind transit oriented residential developments is that residents will be liberated from their cars. New developments in Chicago are making sure residents won't be parking on streets to get the best of both worlds.

Patty Wetli and Alisa Hauser report on the emergence of a new layer of disincentives for residents living in Chicago's transit oriented developments: leases that prohibit eligibility for zoned parking permits.

"Several aldermen are approving transit-oriented developments with the contingency that lessees are ineligible for zoned parking permits," reports Wetli and Hauser. No codified policy regarding transit oriented development is guiding these parking prohibitions. However, according to the article, a consensus is building around the parking zone permits.
