Resilience is one of the hottest buzzwords in contemporary planning, and planners in communities around the country are only beginning to realize the multiple benefits of the attention and funding devoted to resilience plans.
"In the aftermath of such devastation, resilience planning has proved that destruction can be an opportunity for building stronger and longer lasting communities," according to a post by Lauren Pollack.
Given the new understanding of the importance and potential of planning for resilience, the article provides a long list of some of the best examples of planners working to "prepare coastal communities for extreme weather in the 21st century…"
Examples include the Living Breakwaters project in Staten Island, New York, the Urban Watershed Management Plan in Santa Monica, and the Greater New Orleans Water Plan, which was honored with the National Planning Excellence Award for Environmental Planning at the 2015 APA Awards.
