A plan in the earliest possible stages of outreach and environmental review would extend the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority's existing Red Line north of Atlanta farther into Fulton County.
Darin, the ATL Urbanist, reports that MARTA is holding public meetings this week to begin exploring the idea of a Red Line extension north into Fulton County. "The project, if it gets through the environmental study period unscathed and finds federal funding, would send trains northward into the upper area of Fulton County, alongside Ga. 400." writes Darin.
Darin also notes that the proposed route crosses a big stretch, "through some areas that are heavily populated with homes, businesses and retail." Darin also speculates a little about the willingness of those areas to add density along the proposed route and near proposed station locations.
A press release from MARTA provides information about the status of the project: "A formal Notice of Intent to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) has been filed as required by the Federal Transportation Administration and U.S. Department of Transportation. The project is ready to proceed to the next steps in project scoping – finalizing the EIS and project evaluation."
