The beleaguered organization needs more funds to continue running past this year.
"Last week, Illinois lawmakers stepped in to apparently bail out the CTA. The beleaguered agency was prepared to severely reduce service in July to bridge a $55 million budget gap, a.k.a. the "doomsday" plan. Under the recent deal, which passed as part of the state budget, the CTA should receive money to help tide them over for the rest of the year, as long as the agency agrees not to raise fares, lay off employees or cut service for that time. Also as part of the plan, costly paratransit services for the disabled will transfer from CTA to Pace."
