Black Cab drivers say autonomous cars won’t be able to handle London’s unique conditions.
London’s black cab drivers are expressing skepticism that robotaxis can navigate the city’s notoriously complex street system.
According to an Associated Press article, a representative for the Licensed Taxi Drivers’ Association called autonomous taxis “a solution looking for a problem” in a city already clogged with traffic where jaywalking is not illegal, like in many U.S. cities.
Three companies, Wayve, Waymo, and Baidu, are working to launch autonomous taxi pilots in London. The companies say they’re not trying to replace black cabs, but rather will add a new option for Londoners who can choose one of the many transportation modes available.
