A new development in West Hollywood could incorporate the landmark Viper Room concert venue, reports Steven Sharp. "The project, named for its address at 8850 Sunset Boulevard, would rise along the south side of the Sunset Strip between Larrabee Street and San Vicente Boulevard, replacing the Viper Room as well as billboards, parking, and a handful of other small commercial buildings." Details are available in a draft EIR published by the city.
The development would include "a 115-room hotel, as well as meeting space, amenities, retail, and a new space for the Viper Room, as well as 31 market-rate condominiums and 10 units of affordable housing." The project calls for 240 on-site subterranean parking spots and is composed of two separate buildings connected by "a bridge structure on the top levels of the building, which would include additional restaurant space, amenity decks, and swimming pools for residents and hotel guests." The project is among several high-profile developments along the Sunset Strip. "Silver Creek Development Co., which paid $80 million for the development site in 2017, has tapped Culver City-based architecture firm Morphosis to design the mid-rise structure."
Pending approval of entitlements from the city, construction is expected to begin in 2022, a year later than previously anticipated.
