A study of three of the country's population and cultural centers reveals the kinds of discrimination same-sex couples and transgender individuals are likely to encounter on the rental market.
The Urban Institute has completed a pilot study of housing discrimination against same-sex couples and transgender individuals, finding "that in the early stages of the rental search process, housing providers discriminate against gay men and transgender people on some treatment measures but treat lesbians and heterosexual women comparably."
Diane K. Levy, Douglas A. Wissoker, Claudia Aranda, Brent Howell, Rob Pitingolo, Sarale H. Sewell, and Robert Santos author the study, described by an abstract on the Urban Institute website. The pilot study used paired testing to examine the Dallas–Fort Worth, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C. metro areas.
