The Urban Displacement project produces not only a detailed portrait of gentrification and displacement in California, but also a comparison between the state's two mega regions: the San Francisco Bay Area and Southern California.
"A team of researchers at the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs has created an interactive mapping tool to help community leaders better understand the effects of new light-rail and subway projects and related developments — especially on low-income communities," according to an article by Stan Paul.
The UCLA researchers worked with researchers from UC Berkeley on the Urban Displacement project, which documents the nature of gentrification and displacement in the San Francisco Bay Area and Southern California regions. The project also called on the work and expertise of community based organizations, regional planning agencies, and the California Air Resources Board.
Paul lists the key findings for Los Angele County, including evidence of gentrification and "upscaling" of areas around transit stations, especially in downtown areas. Another key finding: that Bay Area municipalities have more anti-displacement policies in place than Los Angeles County municipalities.
