The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors acted against the recommendations of county planners in moving toward banning utility-scale wind energy production from unincorporated parts of the county.
"After hearing pleas from more than a dozen Antelope Valley residents, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors took preliminary steps Tuesday to ban utility-scale wind turbines in unincorporated areas of the county," reports Sarah Favot. Much of the area affected by the decision is currently zoned for agricultural uses.
"The supervisors unanimously approved a draft Renewable Energy Ordinance that updated permitting and regulations on small-scale wind and solar projects and utility-scale solar projects," according to Favot.
The decision by the Board of Supervisors rejected the recommendation of planners with the county's Department of Regional Planning, who recommended that wind utilities be allowed, but regulated. According to Favot, the county's Renewable Energy Ordinance is under consideration in response to state pressure to achieve 50 percent renewable sources of energy by 2030.
