Late at night vandals are leaving plastic-foam cups spelling out messages in chain link fences overlooking freeways in Phoenix.
"In the morning, the white foam glistens in the sun, a rush-hour greeting for all. Cup-fiti has been all over U.S. 60 in Mesa... It's both ingenious and annoying, experts say. Ingenious because the cup writer stands behind the fence and forms words backward. ... The transition from paint tags to picnic-ware messages is a sketchy one, but after Sept. 11, patriotic cup messages appeared on East Coast highway fences, and the trend migrated West. Now, says Randy Blazak, Portland State University popular culture expert, patriotism has been conquered by personal need."
