Ridership on public transit across the nation jumped 2.8 percent in thefirst quarter of the year, the American Public Transportation Associationreports. According to APTA, every mode of transportation showed an increasein riders. Among transit modes, light rail had the largest increase of 6.4percent. This was followed by heavy rail at 5.5 percent, commuter rail at4.3 percent, and bus systems at 1.37 percent. The biggest gainers in lightrail were Portland, Oregon (7.5 percent), Boston (7.5 percent), New JerseyTransit (7.4 percent), and Baltimore (6.1 percent). Among commuter railsystems, the Trinity Railway Express serving Dallas-Ft. Worth showed a 101percent ridership increase during the first quarter, the highest amongcommuter rail systems, due to a major service expansion.
