By 2030, China will have 220 cities containing a population of 1 million or more, 24 of which will be megacities. The boom China is expected to go through, 'boggles the imagination of North Americans and Europeans.'
Building 220 cities is a massive undertaking. It will take a vast infrastructural effort which will see China construct 50,000 skyscrapers and 170 completely new mass transit systems, the equivalent of more than 'ten New Yorks.'
This will all come at a great cost, so it's imperative that these cities are served by clean energy and sustainable food sources. Alex Steffen charts China's progress so far and its plans for the future.
