The Mayor of Paris chooses a cautious new vision for the redevelopment of the old market district.
Les Halles, the old market district of Paris, has had many looks in its eight centuries, but everyone agreed that its last makeover in the 1970's was a disaster. This time, Mayor Bertrand Delanoë has decided to reject all of the architectural proposals and has instead appointed the winning architect to act as coordinator of the evolving redevelopment project. In choosing "an urban concept for the heart of Paris," the Mayor hopes to focus on Les Halles' place in the landscape of central Paris. "It should be a place people want to go to. It should become a major public space.... We want something that will not have to be torn down in 25 years."
