Volunteers in Cleveland suburb, Euclid, undertook a traffic calming and beautification project on one of the city's downtown streets.

Lake Shore Boulevard has recently gotten some new plants and lost four traffic lanes. "Approximately 25 volunteers used brooms, brushes, rollers and cans of paint to transform a stretch of Lake Shore Boulevard to slow traffic and make the city’s downtown safer and more inviting for pedestrians and cyclists," Steven Litt writes for Cleveland Plain Dealer.
The temporary changes were made with cones, paint, and other easy-to-move objects. "The design removed two of four traffic lanes and reapportioned the space with parking lanes on the north and south sides of the street, plus dedicated bike lanes and a center median with turn lanes at intersections. The median is decorated with potted greenery planted by the volunteers," Litt reports.
Volunteers worked to make the improvements as visually appealing as possible, painting crosswalks and bike lanes for the project, which will coincide with the city’s art walk.
