About a month after guerrilla urbanists installed two handmade, unsanctioned benches at bus stops in Chicago’s Ukrainian Village, the city has installed sanctioned benches at both stops. The Northwest Neighborhood Alliance, who installed the original benches, say they intend to continue building and installing benches across Chicago.

Block Club Chicago reports:

[NNA Founder Sam Kovnar] said the installation of the permanent benches is a win for the Northwest Neighborhood Alliance, especially considering the city could have ignored or trashed the unpermitted benches without consequence.

“I was expecting that they would either destroy the benches in the dead of night or send us an angry letter,” Kovnar said. “If the city was going to do something, this is the route that I would have hoped that they chose.”

NNA members said they will bring additional homemade benches to West Town and Humboldt Park bus stops in the next few weeks.
