In an effort to update east London for the kind of transit the city has today, Mayor Sidiq Kahn announced plans for three new Thames crossings. These crossings would include a new light rail bridge, a car-free bascule bridge, and a new tunnel for car traffic. The area which was served by ferries in the 1960s and earlier, has lost its dock and has been a candidate for new bridges for some time.

Feargus O'Sullivan of City Lab argues that the new tunnel in Silvertown is a mistake, suggesting that it will only induce demand for car traffic. Suggesting that it "pushes Mayor Khan’s promise to create a “greener, cleaner London” a little further away from reality."
