New York Population Tops 8 Million

According to Census figures, New York City accounted for more than two-thirds of the state's growth. The Bronx rebounds from urban blight.

"The city became the engine of state growth, a change from the past. It grew by 456,000 people to 8,008,278, accounting for more than two-thirds of the total state population gain. A decade of sustained immigration, combined with several years of prosperity, helped drive the increase by drawing newcomers and persuading New Yorkers to stay put, officials and analysts said."
