"The Surface Transportation Policy Project recently released astudy Driven to Spend: The Impact of Sprawl on Household TransportationExpenses, which states that transportation costs account for 15% of the Bay Areahousehold budget - only housing costs, at 22%, account for a greaterpercentage of household expenditures. Bay Area transportation costs wereranked tenth highest in the country, although the Bay Area was 24th inpercentage of household budget spent on transportation. Within the BayArea, transportation costs were lowest in Emeryville, San Francisco, andAlbany, and highest in Los Altos Hills, Portola Valley, and San Martin.The study explained that transportation costs varied according to theamount of sprawl in each community; compact communities that are morecentered around public transit and where residences are closer to storesand schools have lower transportation costs."
