The auto and real estate industries helped to replace the solid mass transit system Los Angeles had in the first part of the 20th century with the automobile. Now the city is trying to "superimpose a new transit system on a now densely populated, built-up city." But Los Angeles' mass transit story has some lessons for New York. "New York City's transit system is healthy, up and running. But the city has made plenty of decisions in deference to the car, and New Yorkers are paying the price in worsening traffic and congestion."
