The Dutch Minister for Development Cooperation, Agnes van Ardenne, and the Dutch Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment, Pieter van Geel, discuss the importance of energy in the developing world, and its role in reducing poverty and fuelling economic growth.
The Netherlands played hosted the international conference Energy for Development (E4D) on 12, 13 and 14 December 2004. The conference was jointly sponsored by the Dutch Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment (VROM), the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the World Bank, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the World Business Council on Sustainable Development (WBCSD). The aim of the organizers was discuss the essential role energy plays in the alleviation of poverty in the developing world, and to engage governments, industry and the financial sector in energy-related dialogue.
