What was once parking lots and vacant buildings have been transformed into the four-acre Harwood Park.
Downtown Dallas is home to a brand new park thanks to a public-private partnership between the Dallas Park and Recreation Department and the Downtown Dallas Parks Conservancy (DDPC). DDPC is a nonprofit organization advancing the long-term development and support of public parks within the urban core. Their vision is to nurture and protect neighborhood parks in Downtown Dallas, creating an urban environment that spurs moments of inspiration and restoration. According to the latest market data, Downtown Dallas' population has grown by 71 percent in the past decade. Over 13,000 residents now live in Downtown and over 80,000 residents live in the City Center (within a 2 mile radius of Downtown).
Opened in September 2023, the four-acre Harwood Park offers sweeping green lawns, over 200 trees, an event venue, and a pavilion. The park also includes spots for outdoor dining and “ghost mammoth” playground structures that harken back to when these giant creatures once roamed. Harwood Park is the final of the four priority parks that DDPC is building in partnership with the Dallas Park and Recreation Department. The park site was previously a collection of surface parking lots and vacant buildings in a historic district.
