The Atlanta region could soon gain a commuter rail line similar to those found in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles.

"MARTA is close to approving a passenger rail line through Clayton County that supporters hope will transform commuting and economic development south of Atlanta," report David Wickert and Leon Stafford.
"The 22-mile line would connect MARTA’s East Point station to Jonesboro and Lovejoy along the existing Norfolk Southern railroad right of way," add Wickert and Stafford.
The plan calls for diesel-powered trains that would be bigger and faster than MARTA’s existing electric rail vehicles, according to the article. Wickert and Stafford also write that the plans are a sign that MARTA plans expansions deep into the Altanta region's suburbs.
The MARTA Board of Directors will consider the plan next month.
