The Chicago Avenue bridge has been closed since 2025 — and it won’t reopen anytime soon. The city expects construction on the bridge, which it originally aimed to complete by December 2026, to run through spring 2027. The delay prompted Downtown Ald. Brendan Reilly to "lacerate" the Chicago Department of Transportation in an Oct. 29 meeting, Quinn Myers writes for Block Club Chicago.

Block Club Chicago reports:

“Completely and totally irresponsible and a massive bureaucratic failure are the words I would use to describe your department’s mishandling of the bridge repair project and staging,” Reilly said on Thursday.

The work on the Chicago Avenue bridge includes replacing the temporary bridge with a permanent one, creating a new riverwalk and replacing the Halsted Street viaduct. During Thursday’s meeting, department deputy commissioner Anne Zhang described the project as “two major projects combined into one.”
