Zoox, a robotaxi operator owned by Amazon, will begin testing its autonomous vehicles in Los Angeles. The company says the vehicles will be accompanied by human drivers, according to a report by Dan Zukowski in Smart Cities Dive.

Unlike other autonomous taxi operators, Zoox designed a purpose-built car for its driverless operations. “For testing operations, however, Zoox begins by deploying retrofitted Toyota Highlander SUVs with human drivers.”

The company, which is currently testing vehicles in the San Francisco Bay Area, Las Vegas, Miami, Seattle and Austin, Texas, appears to be taking a slower approach to its rollout than competitors such as Waymo or Cruise, who have run into conflict with regulators.
