As the uses of curb space become more diverse, city officials are working to understand how to best manage this increasingly important urban amenity.

The 2024 State of Curbs & Parking Report from mobility platform operator Populus indicates that U.S. cities are increasingly understanding the value of curb management, but are struggling to make sense of the growing body of data on curb usage. “From improving enforcement through digital tools to leveraging data for real-time decision making, cities are beginning to chart a new path forward.”
According to a survey of city officials by Populus, “More than 60% of respondents indicated that their cities have deployed some form of parking analytics tooling, yet 74% still struggle to leverage parking data to inform smarter decisions.” Cities are also experimenting with new approaches such as dynamic parking pricing, dedicated delivery and rideshare zones, and mobile payment systems to more effectively manage curbside space.
