"What planners call the ''AB'' block of Boylston between Arlington and Berkeley should be a stunning gateway to Copley Square and beyond. It is not. Shreve, Crump & Low holds on like Fort Apache next to the likes of Tweeter Etc., Jennifer Convertibles, The Tannery shoe store, and The Men's Warehouse. ''None of us are happy with it,'' says Meg Mainzer-Cohen, president of the Back Bay Association.These are all perfectly good places, but they belong elsewhere, perhaps near Downtown Crossing in the land of Filene's and the discount stores, or the burbs. If this judgment sounds snooty, it simply reflects the private judgment of virtually everyone familiar with situation. This block needs retail dialysis."
