It's a small step forward on a portion of the Bx6 bus line in Bronx, but the center-running bus is coming to more corners of New York City soon.
Jose Martinez reports from the Bronx on a major new innovation for bus transit in New York City.
"The bus lane for the Bx6, a Select Bus Service route carrying close to 24,000 people on weekdays, is the first in the center of the street," according to Martinez.
As Martinex explains, the bus is designed to run along the median to avoid the numerous conflicts that occur along the curb at the side of the street (e.g., deliver trucks, cars dropping off passengers, other buses). Some commuters Martinez talks to have noticed that the Bx6 moves faster than normal buses.
While the Bx6 runs next to the media only along a small portion of its route, "the city hopes that it serves as a model for other bus routes in the city," according to Martinez. "Riders on one of the busiest bus routes in Queens will see the median-hugging lanes when Select Bus Service comes to the Q52 and Q53 on Woodhaven and Cross Bay Boulevards on Nov. 12."
