"Some architects and academic observers had wondered whether the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks meant the end of the era of the skyscraper and a symbolic architecture that could call attention to itself as a possible target. But public reaction to preliminary designs for the site were somewhat contradictory: Doubts that anyone would want to work in a supersized building, but also calls for a bold statement that would soar high. The Libeskind and THINK proposals, selected from nine proposals by seven teams of world-class architects, apparently came closest to addressing both sentiments."
