Parking lots and one-story buildings are being rapidly redeveloped in the Short North, located just north of Downtown Columbus. New parking requirements are aimed at streamlining the development process and ensuring adequate parking.

Brent Warren reports that the city of Columbus is moving forward with proposed parking requirements in parts of the city. The new parking requirements were originally proposed two years ago in the Short North Parking Study, explains Warren.
"The new proposal calls for a standard set of parking requirements for any new development within the boundaries of what would be called the Short North Special Parking Area (which consists of all of Italian Village and most of Victorian Village)," writes Warren. Developers will be allowed an in-lieu fee if they fail to meet the parking requirements. All revenue generated by the in-lieu fee will be "earmarked for the neighborhood and 'primarily used to address parking supply and mobility issues…'"
The parking requirements are designed to simplify parking requirements in a part of the city that is seeing several new developments, as documented in an article by Walker Evans from August 2016.The city launched a public hearing process for outreach on the new parking requirements this week.
