The threat to communities is not tall buildings, but bad design, argues John King in response to a proposed height-limit measure in Berkeley, CA.
"Here's what fear of heights has come to: in Berkeley, where the wonderful Campanile clock tower rises 307 feet, a measure on Tuesday's ballot would make it almost impossible to build anything above three stories... it's a simplistic measure that takes valid concerns to absurd lengths. But the threat to existing communities isn't density, as critics claim, or tall new buildings. It's bad new buildings. The focus should be on using growth to make a place better, instead of trying to kill or at least shrink all new development."
