Washington County, located just west of Portland, is planning a regional trail that could eventually reap benefits for recreation and transportation.
Michael Anderson shares news of the planning process behind the Council Creek Regional Trail: "a vision for a mostly off-road connection between Hillsboro, Forest Grove and Banks — which will also connect the westernmost stop in the MAX system with some of Oregon’s best rural bike routes, including the beloved Banks-Vernonia Trail and a possible future connection to the Pacific Coast."
According to Andersen, the straighter route was chosen over a winding, creekside route, making the trail a potential transportation corridor west of Hillsboro. Andersen also notes that the plan will still require funding for implementation, but Washington County has a "tradition of funding paths with property tax revenue and…strong support for bike recreation," so "getting this bikeway on the ground is very likely to happen eventually."
