Hawaii’s Pearl Harbor Bike Path is Flooding More Often, Forcing Commuters Onto More Dangerous Roads

The 5-mile Pearl Harbor Bike Path in Honolulu, Hawaii faces increasingly frequent flooding, forcing people who use it to detour to more dangerous streets, reports Matthew Leonard in Honolulu Civil Beat. According to University of Hawaiʻi data, there are at least eight spots where significant flooding occurs, in some cases making the path impassable even for cars.

The Honolulu Department of Transportation Services (DTS) is working on a plan to improve the bikeway as part of the South Shore Trail. “But a fix for that part of the bikeway isn’t likely anytime soon because even the planning phase for the South Shore trail won’t be complete until 2028, and the project itself could take up to 20 years overall, DTS deputy director Jon Nouchi said in December 2023.”
