Critics of express lanes have often described the tolling as a double-tax for the use of highways. In a first, Florida is planning to charge for express lanes on toll roads. Triple tax?
"Express lanes are coming to Florida's toll roads, and if you want to use them, you will be paying twice," reports Michael Turnbell. "Such double-tolling would be a first in the U.S., affecting highways that are slated to be widened, such as Florida's Turnpike and the Sawgrass Expressway."
The express lanes are expected by 2018 on the turnpike in some parts of Miami Dade. Turnbell also notes that the express lanes are coming to stretches of roads that are eventually designnated for widening: "In Broward, plans call for the Sawgrass to get a new express lane in each direction between Sunrise Boulevard and Coral Ridge Drive starting in 2017 or 2018. The turnpike would also get a new lane in each direction from the Sawgrass to Glades Road."
