A post by Njaimeh for Urbanful surveys the recent studies and stories about the gender disparity of bike riders around the country ("women make up only a quarter of all bike trips in the United States") and in individual cities ("Women riders accounted for an average of 23.5 percent of overall rentals" for bikeshare systems in New York, Chicago, and Boston).

Njaimeh goes on to cite articles and studies addressing a number of the factors that influence the low rate of biking among women, including concerns over safety, clothing, sexual harassment, and income disparity.
