New York Times advocates for more government involvement in solving a housing crisis "nearly as severe as the one that spurred Congress to act just after World War II."
In an Op/Ed piece, the New York Times contends that the United States is facing a housing crisis comparable to that which instigated the Federal Housing Act of 1949. Government intervention in that era benefited Americans of all income levels, the editorial board contends, but was partially rescinded in the 1980s. The newspaper considers the Congressionally-appointed Millennial Housing Commission's recent report and argues for more spending on rent subsidies, tax incentives and housing aid to local governments while promoting mixed income projects that do not segregate the poor.
