The Milken's Institute report ranked San Francisco-San Mateo-Redwood City at the top of the performance index for the first time in the list's 15-year history.

Richard Florida shares news of the 2014 edition of the Milken Institute’s Best-Performing Cities report, released on January 8, 2015. Florida interprets the rankings as evidence of an uneven recovery across cities and metro areas. "The study shows how the recovery has been concentrated in—and, indeed, has revolved around—what I have dubbed the twin pillars of America’s knowledge/energy economy, with the best performers being energy centers and tech hubs," writes Florida.
See the article (or the actual report) for the complete list, but here's a quick overview of the top of the list, as described by Florida: "The top performing metro this year is San Francisco, up from third place last year. It’s yet another indicator of the ongoing shift to urban tech. Indeed, this is the first time that San Francisco has topped the list in its 15-year history, outdistancing Austin, last year’s top performer (now number two), and San Jose, in the heart of Silicon Valley (fourth place)."
