"Where Franklin's campus blends into the surrounding community, Pixar founder Steven Jobs has created a world of private splendor, despite being literally across the street from City Hall. A black fence rims the perimeter, telling the public to look but not touch...Pixar is saying that companies with enough clout should be able to make their own rules. Compare this to the scene in San Mateo where Franklin Resources, a financial services firm with 7,000 employees worldwide, last year opened a global headquarters that throws itself wide open to outsiders...The lead planner was Calthorpe Associates of Berkeley. Calthorpe specializes in 'new urbanism,' where development puts housing, shops and jobs together near transit. This is the Bay Area's most ambitious example..."
