Some would argue that introducing streetcars to auto-oriented streets is a recipe for collisions. Drivers in Atlanta are already having trouble mixing with streetcars, before the system even launches.
"The Atlanta Streetcar was involved in a crash with a car on Sunday, marking the second accident for the system during its testing phase," reports Carla Caldwell.
The collisions are only the most recent setback for the system—the project is also $6 million over budget and over a year behind schedule, according to Caldwell. Moreover, earlier this month, "the [Federal Transit Administration] flagged 'outstanding safety and hazard mitigation issues,'" according to a separate article by Jonathan Shapiro.
